OUR SHEEP

This page is an introduction to our flock of Coloured Shetland Sheep. To see more pictures of the flock through the seasons and as they raise lambs, use the drop-down menu above.

The Shetland sheep is known for the quality of its wool - fine, crimpy and resilient. In our breeding program we strive to maintain this superb wool quality. The wool from each breeding animal is micron tested to establish its fineness as well as being examined for strength, resilience and colour. Coloured Shetland sheep are rare and we try to ensure the full range of natural colours is represented in our flock, from white through a range of greys to black, and through a range of fawns to brown. We do not use sheepdogs. Most of our sheep are halter trained, and all will follow us anywhere with a bucket!

LAMBS PLAYING.
This picture was taken in mid-April and the lambs are roughly two weeks old. At this age they are already confident enough to leave their mothers and play. Shetland sheep come in a range of colours and patterns, so it is easy to tell them apart. Every sheep in our flock has its own name. Visit the LAMBS pages for more pictures.

HALTER TRAINING.
Most of our breeding animals are halter trained. As adults they reap the benefits of this. They are comfortable being handled so there is no fear and no mad scrambling about when they need feet trimmed, wool sheared, brambles removed etc. Here Zippy is being halter trained. As you can see on the left she is a bit cross at first, wiggling her tail and trying to shake off the halter. However as you can see on the right, very soon she is perfectly happy with the new situation.
See the
SHEEP SHOWS page to see Zippy one year later at her first show, and search the LAMBS pages to see her lambs.

LEAH WITH APRIL ON DAY ONE.
Shetlands can live active and productive lives long into their teens. Leah is 13 years old now. Usually she has twins or triplets, but in 2005 she gave herself a break and had just the one. To see Leah giving birth to twins visit the BIRTH page.

SHETLAND RAMS, MID-WINTER.
This is Rocky showing the natural short tail of the Shetland sheep, and his friend Jubilee. Rocky is home bred and was champion at the Royal Bath & West show. Jubilee was bought in to provide an outcross. He was breed champion at the Mid-Devon show.
See the
SHEEP SHOWS  page for the result of Rocky's return to the show ring.
